September 21 of each year has been designated World Peace Day by the United Nations. To inaugurate the day, the "Peace Bell" is rung at UN Headquarters in New York City, United States. The bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents. The bell is referred to as "a reminder of the human cost of war." The inscription on its side reads: "Long live absolute world peace.”
The World Peace Day celebration at Nupho camp was held at Nupo camp hall with around 300 participants. The half day celebration started with prayers and followed with speeches by representatives from the government, COERR, refugee leader, Karen women organization and ethnic groups. There were also performances shown by refugees and Thai students from nearby communities. Exhibition about COERR’s activities including Peace and Healing of Memory and Reconciliation, several social services activities and agriculture/environmental protection activities were also shown on the World Peace Day.
The success of the program was due to unity and voluntary mind of refugees and all concerned in coordination and participation in this remarkable celebration.
